ACEC Prepared an Expert Analysis on the Roma Holocaust in Slovakia

An integral part of the initial phase of the project was the establishment of an expert pillar providing a framework for further activities. In this context, ACEC prepared an independent expert analysis focused on the Roma genocide in Slovakia. The document offers a fact-based overview of current societal approaches to this topic.

The ROMDIEM project is based on transnational cooperation. The Slovak part of the analysis was developed with an emphasis on domestic historical and social realities and reflects the specific characteristics of the Slovak context. The analysis focuses not only on the identification of historical facts, but also on naming the barriers that currently affect public knowledge and societal recognition of the Roma Holocaust.

Experts from several fields contributed to the preparation of the document, including history, sociology, education, and work with marginalised communities. The multidisciplinary approach made it possible to place the topic of the Roma Holocaust within a broader context of human rights and social inclusion.

The analysis represents ACEC’s contribution to the pan-European expert output of the ROMDIEM project. The Slovak perspective serves as a basis for the preparation of further recommendations and strategic documents intended for public institutions, the education sector, and policy makers.

ROMDIEM is funded by the European Union programme CERV-2024-CITIZENS-REM (Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values – Citizens’ Remembrance). The project will run from March 2025 to February 2027, building on the EU’s long-standing commitment to strengthening historical memory, education and social inclusion.
