From 24th October to the end of November 2024, the public will have the opportunity to visit the exceptional exhibition “Fragile Memories”, to be displayed at the Synagogue in Šaštín – Stráže. This photographic exhibition, created by photographer Barbora Haviarová, offers a profound insight into ageing, intergenerational solidarity, and the inclusion of Roma communities through intimate portraits of elderly individuals.
“I aim to tell the story of a person, not with words, but through the story written in their face,” said Barbora Haviarová. “The photographs were taken in the home environments of the seniors who graciously modelled for me. Reflecting on it, I have never experienced a more rewarding photoshoot. I have never encountered more interesting people, nor met better models. Each of them welcomed the visit, and each one collaborated with unwavering willingness,” Haviarová recalls.
The series of artistic photographs were created over the course of four years and document seniors from the eastern regions of Slovakia in their natural surroundings. The unembellished portraits amplify the authenticity of the individuals. Particularly moving are the stories of those for whom professional photography was a new life experience, as they share personal memories and life reflections.
“Although the subject of ageing has always interested me globally, I find it even more fascinating to get to know other cultures, different perceptions of the world, and varying life values. It is often said that we return to being children in old age. I believe that the child within us always remains; we simply lose the courage to show it. For me, the pure, childlike joy in the eyes of these seniors during our visits was the most beautiful experience,” added the photographer.
The project aims to contribute to the long-term public discourse on ageing, Roma inclusion, and our society as a whole. Its goal is to present the public with unaltered and authentic testimonies of lives filled with strength and wisdom, offering lessons for both the present and the future.
Among the respondents is Milan Kroščen from Hrabušice, born in 1949, and the oldest participant, Štefan Šimončič from Levoča, born in 1925. Their life stories, memories, and experiences create a powerful narrative about Slovakia’s past and its people.
The “Fragile Memories” exhibition at the Synagogue in Šaštín – Stráže will showcase the first of the photographs produced. The vernissage will be held symbolically during October, the month of respect for the elderly. The exhibition will run until the end of November 2024.
This project is realised with financial support from the Fund for the Support of National Minority Cultures, the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, and the ZSE Foundation.
