The Power of Family Memory: Five Personal Testimonies on the History of the Roma Holocaust

Within the framework of the ROMDIEM project, five personal testimonies of descendants of survivors of the Roma Holocaust in Slovakia were recorded. The interviews document family memory and experiences transmitted across generations, complementing historical knowledge of the Roma Holocaust with a personal perspective.

The documentation process focused on recording the experiences of families in which trauma from the period of the Second World War was transmitted despite decades of silence about these events. The five interviews capture accounts of persecution, life under constant threat, and loss, as well as strategies of survival and mutual support within families.

The recorded testimonies represent narratives that are not commonly included in official historical sources or in formal education. The documentation was carried out with an emphasis on a sensitive approach and respect for the trauma experienced by the respondents.

The personal testimonies will form part of the forthcoming digital archive and documentary film of the ROMDIEM project. The material serves as a resource for further educational, research, and documentation activities aimed at preserving the memory of the Roma Holocaust.

ROMDIEM is funded by the European Union programme CERV-2024-CITIZENS-REM (Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values – Citizens’ Remembrance). The project will run from March 2025 to February 2027, building on the EU’s long-standing commitment to strengthening historical memory, education and social inclusion.
