Commemorative Event on the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Roma Genocide at the Holocaust Museum in Sereď

On 2nd August 2025, Slovakia marked the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Roma Genocide. This day, dedicated to the victims of Nazi persecutions, served as an opportunity to pay tribute to all Roma and Sinti who perished during World War II. The Holocaust Museum in Sereď organised a commemorative event on this occasion, which took place on 4th August 2025.

The event featured speeches by Alexander Daško, the Plenipotentiary of the Government of the Slovak Republic for Roma Communities, Róbert Dobrovodský, the Public Defender of Rights, and Stanislav Daniel, an expert on social inclusion and the Director of the Roma Education Fund. Daniel emphasised the need to remember the past and build a fairer future.

“Let us remember the past – and build the future together. A future where silence will no longer reign. A future in which young Roma will know their history – and be proud of it. A future where a Roma name, language, or dark skin will no longer be considered a reason for shame. Memory is not about vengeance. Memory is about truth. And truth is the foundation of reconciliation,” stated Stanislav Daniel in his speech.

The programme also included a commemorative concert by the piano virtuoso Miloš Biháry and the exhibition Persecution of the Roma during the Holocaust, curated by Mgr. Matej Beránek, PhD. The exhibition, which focused on the fate of the Roma during the Holocaust, highlighted the tragedy of this community and laid the groundwork for further discussion on the Roma genocide.

“We are honoured to have supported and collaborated on the preparation and execution of this commemorative event. The event was not only a moment of remembrance but also a commitment to continue the fight against discrimination and prejudice towards Roma communities,” said Magdaléna Rothová, Director of ACEC.

The activities of the Holocaust Museum in Sereď are a crucial step in the fight against discrimination and prejudice towards Roma communities, providing space for reflection, education, and the creation of a fairer future for all.
